The Patient Care program at Lima Senior High works very hard to expose its students to the real world of healthcare, long before they hit the job market. This year, instructor Ashley Rozell opened 15 of her Lima Senior High students’ eyes with an inside look at Van Wert Health.

March 28, 2019 – Lima, Ohio. For fifteen of Ashley Rozell’s Patient Care students at Lima Senior, learning about healthcare means so much more than reading about it in textbooks and on computer screens. To understand healthcare, you’ve got to experience it up close, first-hand. And that’s just what these students got to
do. On Thursday, March 28th, Lima Senior High students got to experience three primary areas of operations at Van Wert Health (formerly Van Wert Hospital) that directly affect nurses and incoming staff – the setting of splints, the inserting of IVs, and the HR function which allows that students to better understand all the career opportunities that exist at Van Wert Health. This healthcare operation is on the “grow”. With about 500 employees, Van Wert Health is the fourth largest employer in Van Wert County and is in the process of adding on an 84,000 sq. ft. Inpatient Acute and Surgery Wing at the Main Campus.

The hosts from Van Wert Health were incredibly generous with their time and knowledge led by HR Director Tiffany Williams, HR Business Partner Kelly Dickman, Emergency Department Director Paula Stabler, Acute Care and Surgery Director Brad Denning, OB Director Dawn Rhoades, and Education Director, Sammi
For these students, the opportunity of visiting Van Wert Health was intense and rewarding. The students who were fortunate enough to get this experience under the leadership of teacher Ashley Rozell were Lesha Bryant, Ajohlon Bullock, Camara Evans, Itazia Harris, Jada Henderson, Shelbee Hile, Katherine Hooks, Brianna Howard, Zoe King, Skya Lauck, Gracie Thornton, Zai Ware, Lauren Wilight, Teosha Williams, Catheryne Wilson.

So what is the motivation for Van Wert Health to open its door to high school students? Says Kelly Dickman, HR Business Partner “We are expanding at a rapid pace and there are presently and will be many opportunities for employment within Van Wert Health.” Paula Stabler, Emergency Department Director, agrees. “We didn’t realize that there were programs like this out there. This is great!” And Ashley Rozell, Lima Senior Teacher was delighted for her students. “We have been to St. Rita’s Lima Memorial, and now Van Wert Health. This was one of the best because it was so hand-on. Site visits like this have been really good for our students.”

These experiences are making a difference. Let’s hope they keep on coming!
